The poster session, set up in a corner of the OCCC Expo Hall, turned into a lively area between 1 to 4 PM today. All researchers and presenters were excited to be occupying a spot next to their poster, some even earlier. It was evident that they themselves were talking to other presenters, soaking in as much as they could before the actual session began as they would not get a chance to do so later. The poster session, set up in a corner of the OCCC Expo Hall, turned into a lively area between 1 to 4 PM today.  +The session had researchers from a diverse variety of areas displaying their products and work. There was an entire range of posters for popular topics such as machine learning. It was heartening to see that a lot of the projects resonated with Dr. Fei-Fei Li's thoughts in the morning that AI needs to come from humane emotions. Most researchers are developing technologies and frameworks for human pursuits and social good.

It reminded me of my third year in undergraduate, when I was first exposed to molecular biologyI was awed by how technology and modeling is being used for this scientific domain. Since then I have always been interested in using core CS ideas into solving biological problems.

+My poster was on a tool that I have developed to use simulation datasets with a goal to design better wet-lab experiments. These experiments are expensive and difficult to perform, and my method can help design them efficiently based on the prior knowledge we have. My algorithm incorporates a genetic algorithm scheme that is an artificial intelligence based search technique. It mimics evolution; to me it was cool to realize a CS algorithm based on biological evolution, was used to solve a biological challenge, its like technology coming full circle!

Some of them were focused towards applying for graduate school and hopefully, I have encouraged them to do so. It was of course a delight when fellow computational biologists and bioinformaticians dropped by, it felt we had a niche community of our own among the deluge of #GHC17 attendees this year. Even CS professors dropped by, one of whom gave me crucial advice for when I will be looking for faculty positions in the future.

-Posters are up until Friday noon, poster presenters might not be around, but I would encourage all attendees to check out the posters. Go through at least 2 posters, trying to understand the thought behind the poster presenter and their work. Personally for me, I walked out from the session invigorated about what my research, encouraged that I may be on the right track, and a few friends especially my neighbor poster presenter.+
